The West Cork TREC Midsummer event this year was a one day three phase event hosted by Lee Valley Equestrian Centre near Crookstown, Co. Cork. The weather was thankfully dry until the last half an hour when we had some rain during the prize giving.
Traceurs Adele Connor and Ian Squire took the riders on routes along the little back country roads around the Equestrian Centre, and the higher levels also had some nice off-road riding through a couple of farm tracks, woods and fields courtesy of the neighbouring landowners. Chef de Piste Annie O'Neill put some of the cross country jumps in the top paddocks to good use in her PTV course.
We would like to thank the following people:
Our Level 2a route was also classified as a GB Qualifier for the TREC GB Championships 2017. Our thanks to the three judges - Shirley Squire, Adèle Connor & Megan Davies - and to all who helped with all the various jobs on the day. Well done too to Shirley for taking on the role of Chef de Piste and designing her first course. The general consensus from the riders afterwards was that it was a nice course although there was quite a bit of mounting involved.
We would like to acknowledge that there would have been a few more entries had it not been for the POR training session in Punchestown the day before. It was a long and tiring trip for the six young riders who travelled there and back from Castletownbere & Schull.
Next league date - March 19th - PTV competition @ Bantry Pony Trekking. The Chef de Piste this time will be Martha Norton. Closing date for entries will be Wednesday 15th March.

Fourth place went to Bastian, and tied in fifth place was Elaine Dolan-Crowley and Ellie Horgan. Congratulations to all our competitors, and a big thank you to our hosts, organisers and helpers.
The Winter League has already started, and the second competition in the league is set for Sunday January 15th 2017 at Bantry Pony Trekking (Jenni & Martha's). We hope to see you there.
A total of 29 tests were ridden in this competition, the first leg of our Winter League 2016/2017. Some of the riders had never ridden in a 20x60 arena before, for some this was their first ever dressage test, and for some this was their first ever experience of D-TREC where obstacles had to be negotiated during the dressage test. We would like to thank Cashelane Stud for the use of this beautiful venue overlooking Dunmanus Bay, and we hope we shall be able to return again for another competition at a future date. We would also like to thank dressage judge Pam Franklin and her scribe Angelique; Bastian, Adèle and Ian for judging the TREC obstacles; Nicky for reading so many tests; Tom for photos; Claudia for taking control of the signing in sheets and collecting fees; and all the other helpers and spectators. Last but not least, a big thank you to the riders and their horses who made this event a wonderful one to watch.
Three grades of test were available, Novice, Intermediate and Open. A rider entering one level could choose to ride a lower or higher level out of competition, and a number of our members chose to do so. Our congratulations to the well deserved winners for some riding lovely tests:
NOVICE 1st Maria Mahony (Rocky) 2nd Sheila Winters (Nugget) 3rd Elaine Dolan Crowley (Molly)
INTERMEDIATE 1st Zora Feurer (Lily) 2nd Shirley Squire (Grace) 3rd Margaret Manning (Apachi)

A decision was made to remove all penalties for the equipment check on the POR phase. Here are the revised results from the one-day three phase level two event held at Castletownbere on 10th September 2016.
Our thanks to Julie and Annie of Lios Lara Riding Stables for hosting this event, to all their helpers, to Bastian (Technical Delegate), to Ian (Traceur), to Christina (Vet) and to everyone who helped make this a special day. There was a fantastic response by West Cork TREC members to our request to provide pairings for all our under 18 riders who wanted to compete at Level 2, and in the end we had 13 pairs out competing in the three phases and 2 individuals riding H/C in the POR. The weather improved during the morning, allowing the riders to enjoy the stunning scenery on the POR route which took us down quiet back roads and along off-road mountain tracks. The MA phase was ridden while out on the POR route, which was an interesting twist to our normal 3 phase competitions. We had a total of 29 riders for the PTV phase which started later that afternoon. The PTV course took us out across the fields near the stables and the stream that runs between two fields was utilised as a water crossing obstacle. It was a really enjoyable day, and we hope to return to Castletownbere again.
Congratulations to the winners and also to everyone who participated in this PTV leg of our summer league. Results are posted below, and there are photos on our Facebook page.
Level 1 - 1st Ellie Horgan (Shady); 2nd Frances Whooley (Kal); 3rd Elaine Dolan Crowley (Molly)
Level 2 - 1st Sara Gems (Bailey); 2nd Jane Capener (Gladys); 3rd Sue Parfitt (Jester)
Level 3 - 1st Bastian (Flower)
Our next event is the Level 2 One Day 3 Phase Event in Castletownbere on Saturday September 10th.
Also just a quick reminder to all that the MA/PTV Championships are on Sunday September 18th at the Deerpark Equestrian Centre, Ballymahon, Co. Longford.
Congratulations to all 53 competitors who took part in the Nationals, held at Bantry Pony Trekking. The POR route took riders out along tracks and quiet country lanes, past the lake and Level 3 riders rode through the wonderful stone circle outside Kealkill. A selection of photos are uploaded to our Gallery, and more photos can be browsed on our Facebook page.
